🌞 Warm Weather Alert & Open Water Safety Advice 🌊

As we head into a warmer weekend, we expect more people to be outdoors enjoying local parks, rivers, lakes, and reservoirs. While it’s great to make the most of the sunshine, we want to remind residents of the serious risks associated with swimming in open water.

🚫 Open water is NOT the same as a swimming pool:

Temperatures can be extremely low, even in warm weather, leading to cold water shock.

Strong currents, hidden hazards, and sudden drop-offs can quickly put even strong swimmers in danger.

Water quality may be poor, increasing the risk of illness.

⚠️ Cold water shock can cause:

Gasping and breathing difficulties

Rapid loss of strength and coordination

Panic and increased risk of drowning

✅ Stay safe this weekend:

Avoid swimming in rivers, lakes, canals, or reservoirs unless it’s a designated, supervised area.

Never enter the water after consuming alcohol.

Keep a close eye on children near any body of water.

If you see someone in trouble, call 999 immediately – do not enter the water yourself.

Let’s enjoy the sunshine safely and look out for one another.
