Police have received reports of teenagers riding illegal E-Bikes please be aware when purchasing new bikes for your children or yourself. 

 

✅ Legal Requirements for E-Bikes

To be classified as an Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycle (EAPC), your e-bike must:

  • Have pedals that can propel the bike
  • Be fitted with an electric motor of no more than 250 watts
  • Stop providing motor assistance once you reach 15.5 mph (25 km/h)
  • Display the power output, manufacturer’s details, and battery voltage or max speed
  • If your e-bike meets these standards:

  • You don’t need a licence, insurance, or registration
  • You must be 14 or older to ride it legally2
  • ❌ If Your E-Bike Doesn’t Qualify as an EAPC

    It will be treated as a moped or motorcycle, meaning:

  • You’ll need a driving licence
  • The bike must be registered, taxed, and insured
  • You must wear a crash helmet
  • It must be type approved and display an approval plate
  • 🚨 Enforcement & Safety

    Staffordshire Police have seized illegal e-bikes that didn’t meet these standards, especially DIY or modified versions with excessive power3. Riding such bikes on public roads without proper documentation can result in:

  • Fines
  • Penalty points
  • Vehicle seizure
