POLICE CORDONS AND CRIME SCENES When dealing with incidents we sometimes have to cordon off an area and this can be done for a number of reasons. We understand that things such as road closures and prohibiting access can be a huge inconvenience for the public but we only do so when it is absolutely necessary. If you see an area cordoned off with "POLICE DO NOT CROSS" tape, then there is most likely an established crime scene in place. This will be done to preserve evidence and prevent interference with our investigations. Sometimes, we cordon an area off with tape in the interest of public safety – not just for the risk of physical harm but the potential emotional trauma that could be caused should the public view some of the upsetting things we have to deal with. We do not always know how long a scene or cordon will be in place. Sometimes there can be complexities in an investigation and sometimes we may simply be keeping an area safe whilst waiting for a partner agency to complete whatever they need to do. We do our best to create as little disruption for the public as possible and keep people updated when we have the right information to do so. Preserving a crime scene or manning a cordon is no fun for officers, especially in challenging weather or if they have been there for an extended period of time. Officers will always try their best to answer questions but sometimes, in that moment, they may not have the answers. Most people recognise that a cordon or crime scene means they cannot pass through that particular area. In fact, there are many wonderful residents who have supplied water or hot drinks to officers undertaking scene preservation and this is very much appreciated. Sadly, there are those who think the cordon does not apply to them and they verbally abuse officers or try to forcefully enter the crime scene or cordoned off area. Entering a crime scene when instructed not to by an officer can be an arrestable offence. Depending on the circumstances you could actually be committing multiple offences and be arrested. This is not something we want to do. Please, respect the tape. | ||||
